World: wheat and maize prices rise

The FAO Food Price Index (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) averaged 136.0 points in September 2026 — 1.5% higher than in August and 5.8% higher than a year earlier. Cereals rose the most. FAO published the data on October 2.

Key figures

  • FAO index: 136.0 points
  • Cereals: +5.1% month on month
  • Cereals: +17.2% year on year
  • Wheat: +6.3%
  • Maize: +5.6%

World wheat prices reached their highest level since August 2023, driven by logistics constraints in the Black Sea region and drought in parts of North America ahead of winter sowing. Maize rose to its highest level in more than three years: US yields came in below expectations and Brazil's export capacity shrank. The next FAO index is due on November 6.
