Ukraine: over 62 million tons of grains and oilseeds threshed, corn 37.5% harvested

Ukraine's Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food reported that as of November 3, farmers had harvested 44.6 million tons of grains and pulses from 8.7 million ha — 75.1% of the projected area, with an average yield of 51.2 centners per hectare (c/ha). Oilseeds — sunflower, soybeans and rapeseed — threshed so far total 17.5 million tons.

Key figures

  • Grains: 44.6 million t
  • Oilseeds: 17.5 million t
  • 75.1% of area harvested
  • Wheat: 26.26 million t
  • Corn: 37.5% of area
  • Sunflower: 88.7%

What changed

The harvest of early crops is complete: wheat, barley, peas and rapeseed have been fully threshed. A week earlier the ministry reported 41.7 million tons of grains and 16.9 million tons of oilseeds — in one week, about 2.9 million tons of grain and 0.6 million tons of oilseeds were added. The harvest of late crops — corn, sunflower, soybeans, sugar beets, buckwheat and millet — continues. Odesa region leads by harvested area (1,262.5 thousand ha), while Chernihiv (79.4 c/ha), Khmelnytskyi (72.3 c/ha) and Sumy (69.7 c/ha) regions lead in yield.

In figures

  • Wheat: 26,259.7 thousand tons from 5,120.5 thousand ha, 51.3 c/ha.
  • Barley: 6,599.2 thousand tons from 1,483.1 thousand ha, 44.5 c/ha.
  • Rapeseed (winter and spring): 3,896.9 thousand tons from 1,328.9 thousand ha, 29.3 c/ha.
  • Corn: 10,775.6 thousand tons from 1,715.2 thousand ha (37.5% of the area), 62.8 c/ha.
  • Sunflower: 10,338.9 thousand tons (88.7% of the area), 22.2 c/ha.
  • Soybeans: 3,229.5 thousand tons (92.9% of the area), 21.6 c/ha.

What it means for the buyer

Most of the remaining work is in corn: only 37.5% of the area has been harvested, so the main load on combines and transport is still ahead. The average corn yield so far is 62.8 c/ha, wheat — 51.3 c/ha. Once the harvest is over, farms sum up the season and plan the next one — it pays to start choosing seed and upgrading machinery early, so that everything is in place for spring fieldwork.

Context

Among late crops, buckwheat (95.9% of the area, 60.6 thousand tons at 13.0 c/ha) and millet (94.9%, 89.9 thousand tons, 23.2 c/ha) are nearly finished. Sugar beets have been lifted: 5,069.2 thousand tons from 102.2 thousand ha — 59.8% of the projected area, with a yield of 496.1 c/ha. Chernivtsi (65.6 c/ha), Vinnytsia (64.1 c/ha) and Kharkiv (60.9 c/ha) regions also show high yields.
