Kazakhstan has harvested more than 43 million tons of feed: hay, silage and straw targets exceeded

Kazakhstan's Ministry of Agriculture announced on November 6 that the feed harvesting campaign is complete. More than 43 million tons of feed of all kinds have been harvested, and the plan was exceeded for the four main items: hay, haylage, silage and straw. In addition, the Food Contract Corporation has formed a feed grain fund of 200 thousand tons.

Key figures

  • Total: over 43 million t
  • Hay: 27 million t
  • Silage: 2.9 million t
  • Straw: 4.9 million t
  • Feed grain fund: 200 thousand t
  • Carryover: 3.6 million t

What changed

Kazakhstan's feed harvesting campaign is over. According to the ministry, exceeding the plan for hay, haylage, silage and straw makes it possible to build an additional reserve and make livestock farms better prepared for the winter housing period. The ministry places particular importance on safety stocks in case of bad weather.

In numbers

Feed harvested by type and plan fulfillment:

  • Hay: 27 million tons, 105.2% of plan.
  • Haylage: 2.4 million tons, 103.9%.
  • Silage: 2.9 million tons, 105.3%.
  • Straw: 4.9 million tons, 103.5%.
  • Concentrated feed: 5.7 million tons, 100.3%.
  • Carryover from last winter: 3.6 million tons.

Feed grain

To give farms additional feed grain, the Food Contract Corporation has formed a feed fund of 200 thousand tons. If needed, this grain will be directed to livestock and poultry farming, including in the off-season. The ministry, together with regional akimats, continues to monitor the completion of work and farms' readiness for wintering.

What it means for buyers

For livestock and mixed farms, wintering is covered with feed to spare, and the state feed fund insures against disruptions in feed grain supply. The campaign is over, so now is a good time to assess how the machinery performed on hay, haylage, silage and straw, and to decide in advance what needs updating before next season.
