Kazakhstan: agri-food exports to Tajikistan reach $550 million in nine months, wheat supplies set to grow

Kazakhstan's Ministry of Agriculture said on November 7 that in January–September 2026 trade in agri-food products with Tajikistan exceeded $564 million, up 32.5%, while Kazakh exports came to $550.2 million. Minister of Agriculture Aidarbek Saparov discussed increasing grain supplies with the Tajik side, including under a government contract for 100 thousand tons of wheat.
Key figures
- Exports: $550.2 million
- Trade growth: +32.5%
- Grain: about 1.1 million t
- Wheat: about 900 thousand t
- Contract: 100 thousand t
- Shipped: 50.8 thousand t
What changed
One of the central issues was a further increase in Kazakh grain supplies. Under the contract between the Food Contract Corporation and Tajikistan's Agency for State Material Reserves for the supply of 100 thousand tons of wheat, 50.8 thousand tons have already been shipped. The parties agreed to step up work on increasing volumes, taking into account the needs of the Tajik market.
In numbers
Agri-food trade between the two countries, according to the ministry:
- Agri-food products account for 49% of the two countries' total trade.
- In 2025, mutual supplies of agricultural products grew by 11%, to about $600 million.
- In 2026, Kazakhstan supplied about 1.1 million tons of grain to Tajikistan, including about 900 thousand tons of wheat.
- Sunflower oil in 2025: 83 thousand tons (+23%); rapeseed oil grew sixfold, soybean oil by 35%, oilcake by 23%.
- Key export items: wheat, sunflower oil, corn and pasta.
Roadmap for 2027–2028
The parties plan to sign a roadmap for agricultural cooperation for 2027–2028. It provides for expanding mutual supplies, developing crop production, seed production and breeding, raising livestock productivity, strengthening veterinary and phytosanitary safety, as well as digitalizing the agri-food sector and sharing experience.
What it means for buyers
Kazakhstan remains one of the main food suppliers to Tajikistan, and the ministry openly states the goal of the talks: to secure steady demand for grain. For grain farms this is a proven export channel for wheat, where the government contract is so far only half fulfilled. Demand for oils and oilcake is also growing, which means processors need more sunflower and rapeseed. Those planning to expand their wheat or oilseed area should work out their seed and harvesting machinery needs in advance.
